Andrey Vorchik took part in the "Soleto 2025" Summer School & Workshop on Experimetrics and Behavioral Economics

July 19–24, Andrey Vorchik, a research intern at the Laboratory, participated in the Soleto 2025 Summer School & Workshop on Experimetrics and Behavioral Economics. The event was organized by Sapienza University of Rome and held in the small town of Soleto in southern Italy. The program included lectures, keynote speeches, and a workshop dedicated to various issues in experimental and behavioral economics.

Andrey presented in the "Belief & Identity" section with a talk titled "Up and Down the Mount Stupid: An Emotional Explanation of the Dunning-Kruger Effect." The Dunning-Kruger effect is a well-known cognitive bias where beginners in a particular field often overestimate their competence to such an extent that they sometimes appear more confident in their knowledge and skills than actual experts. In their joint work, Andrey Vorchik and Murat Mamyshev propose an emotional explanation for this effect: being amateurs in many areas, people frequently underestimate the scope and complexity of a given task, leading them to experience an overly intense emotion of confidence. This, in turn, drives them to make hasty decisions.

A popular explanation of the Dunning-Kruger effect by David Dunning himself can be found here.
